I’m starting this blog for a couple of reasons, but mainly to have somewhere to share what’s on my mind that isn’t a soul-sucking, rage-baiting app filled with useless AI. I also really like that this feels much more intentional, like if someone is reading this right now, you explored around enough to find it.
At first, I liked the endless feed of scroll-able content online. I joined TikTok in 2021, after resisting it for awhile. It was fun at first, and there is a lot of great information and content on there. These days, I find Tiktok and Instagram really draining. The quantity-over-quality nature of most social media sites has ruined what made them fun in the first place.
I think there is an interesting parallel to our environment and to the internet. Corporations have a long, rich history of exploiting our natural resources for profit, no matter the effect it has on the environment, human health, waterways, you name it. They spend billions in advertising, lobbying, etc, to pass the blame on to consumers and weaken environmental regulations. Obviously this has negative cascading effects throughout our lives and in society. The same is true now for the internet. These corporations have created these digital spaces, and are now extracting as much profit from them as possible. They are mining our data, polluting our eyes with constant advertisements and political propaganda, and pit working people against one-another.
I’ve started asking myself, what is the point anymore? And now with generative AI, it’s harder than ever to tell what is real and what isn’t. Like I have enough issues with developing trust and this is only making it worse lol. So this blog and site is my attempt at putting myself out there online in a more genuine way, and to connect with other people who have done the same. :)
